MERRILLVILLE | Nineteen teams of students will be competing in the annual National Student Advertising Competition beginning April 11 at Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza. Typically held in Detroit, the competition brings together college level students from Illinois, Indiana and Michigan to pitch a complete advertising campaign.
According to Allison Meadows Beggs, district 6 chair, the student groups have a multi-million dollar budget (on paper) to create a complete campaign for the corporate sponsor company. The first phase of the competition includes a plans book. Students prepare their strategy and collateral plans to be pre-judged and is half the weight of the competition. From there, students will work on their 20 minute pitch to present to a panel of three judges comprised of industry experts in the field. Five minutes are given for a question and answer portion.
“The event gives students the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the advertising industry,” Meadows Beggs said.
The public is invited to attend the competition, which begins at 8:30 a.m. and runs until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 12. Cost is $10 per person.
This year, students will create a campaign for Glidden Paint. Previous corporate sponsors to the National Student Advertising Competition have been Pepsi, State Farm, and JC Penny.
In addition to the competition, students will spend April 11, practicing their pitch in the judging room for an hour. The competition also includes an educational speaker and a recruiting expo.
