MERRILLVILLE | Police arrested two Merrillville men accused of exposing their genitals to a school bus transporting children Thursday.
Merrillville police Detective Jeff Rice said officers were dispatched to the 8300 block of Taft Street about 9 a.m. Thursday after receiving reports of two nude men standing in the road.
A Merrillville school bus driver and about 20 students on the vehicle were among those who witnessed the situation, Rice said.
When police arrived, Clayton Cooper, 20, and Kyle Cuneo, 23, were found naked and drinking beer in the backyard of Cuneo's residence on Taft Street, Rice said. Cuneo was wearing a diaper, but his genitals still were exposed, Rice said.
Police instructed the men to get on the ground, but both attempted to flee into the residence, Rice said.
Cooper suffered cuts to his head after he slipped on stairs to the home and hit his head on exposed wires where a doorbell should have been located, Rice said.
Both men were apprehended and taken to the Lake County Jail, but Cooper was taken to the Methodist Hospitals Southlake Campus in Merrillville before he was transported to the jail.
Cooper and Cuneo face public intoxication, resisting law enforcement, public indecency and public nudity charges in Merrillville Town Court, and police are determining if more charges will be added, Rice said.
He said Merrillville police received previous reports of Cooper and Cuneo drinking in the nude in public, but police weren't able to apprehend the men at those times.
