MERRILLVILLE | The 11th Annual Walk to Cure Diabetes steps off a 2 p.m. Sunday at Hidden Lake Park, 6355 Broadway, with more than 2,000 people of all ages expected to participate.
Registration begins at noon. There is no registration fee, said Beth Ernsberger, branch manager of the Northern Indiana Branch of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Centier Bank President/CEO Michael Schrage is the corporate chairman of the event that draws walkers from Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties. Some 300 Centier employees will be among those participating, Schrage said.
"Centier is a regular major sponsor of the Juvenile Diabetes walk," he said.
Participants can choose either the one-mile or three-mile course around Hidden Lake Park.
Walkers are asked to collect donations prior to registering, Ernsberger said. Those collecting $100 or more will receive a T-shirt the day of the walk.
"We expect to raise $350,000 to fund research to find a cure for diabetes," she said.
Sunday's event will include activities for all ages, food and music.
Tents will be set up to display crafts and other merchandise, and there'll be aerobic warm-ups scheduled, Ernsberger said.
Buses provided by the Merrillville Community School Corp. will ferry participants between the parking lot and activities.
