MERRILLVILLE | New development could be coming to town.
During the last several weeks, "at least half a dozen" businesses have contacted town officials to discuss their interest in locating in Merrillville, Town Manager Bruce Spires said.
Spires is unable to disclose names of the businesses or where in town they are interested in locating, he said.
Spires is pleased with the potential for more development, which he thinks could be an indication of an improving economy.
Besides the recent interest from businesses, there are other projects being planned or under construction in town.
Among them is a new Keough Mechanical Corp. building that is expected to be built at 2042 E. 88th Drive. The Town Council approved that project earlier this year.
A new M&M Beauty Supply location is currently under construction at 16 W. U.S. 30. A new Family Dollar building on Broadway in north Merrillville is expected to open soon, Town Councilman Richard Hardaway said.
Last week, the Town Council approved tax abatement requests for two other businesses: ImageFirst Healthcare Laundry Specialists and American Fireproofing and Millennium Interiors.
ImageFirst plans to expand its facility near 86th Place and Louisiana Street, and American Fireproofing and Millennium Interiors looks to open a location in a new facility that would be built in the AmeriPlex at the Crossroads development.
Zoning Director Dorinda Gregor said Merrillville typically sees more commercial development inquiries than it does for residential construction, but there are plans for residential growth in the town.
Gregor said construction could begin this spring for duplexes on 21 lots in the Heritage North subdivision, which is south of U.S. 30 near Taney Place.
Gregor said the Plan Commission is considering a planned unit development request for the project. The commission will vote on the request Tuesday. It then moves to the Town Council, Gregor said.
