MERRILLVILLE | The town's Public Works Department had to make adjustments to accommodate town equipment that had been stored on a former Stormwater Management Board member's property.
Several pieces of the Stormwater Utility's equipment, including off-road vehicles and a trailer, had been housed on Bud Crist's property because of limited space at the Public Works Department, said Matt Lake, executive director of the Stormwater Utility.
When Crist wasn't reappointed to the Stormwater Management Board this year, the property was moved to the Public Works Department.
Lake said Crist stored the equipment at no cost as a favor to Merrillville, and the Stormwater Utility's insurance company was aware the items were kept in a structure on Crist's property.
Lake said the equipment always was available for use by the town. Crist didn't use it for personal reasons, he said.
Public Works Director Bruce Spires said there wasn't sufficient room for the equipment at its facilities, but his department made space for the items after cleaning and organizing the town's north barn.
The Stormwater Utility plans to build a new office and educational center for its operations. Lake said all stormwater equipment will be stored there after the project is finished.
