MERRILLVILLE | Food will be the highlight at two ethnic festivals running Friday through Sunday in Merrillville, event organizers said.
The Greek Fest is open from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday and noon to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at SS. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 8000 Madison St.
Lake County Treasurer John Petalas, a member at the church, said lamb is the most popular item sold during the festival. Chicken, shish kabob, gyros and baked goods also are featured. An outdoor beer garden will be open at the event.
Deena Lawley, an event organizer, said the Chris and Lou band will perform at 7 p.m. Friday and Ormi, a local Greek band, will perform at 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The cathedral's Hellenic dancers will perform at 7 and 8:30 each night of the festival, she said.
SerbFest 2013 will be open from noon to midnight Friday and Saturday and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday at St. Elijah Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, 8700 Taft St.
Barbecued lamb and pig, cevaps, sarma and other traditional Serbian meals can be bought, festival chairman Joe Dejanovic said. Apple and cheese strudels, cookies, cakes and sugar-coated Serbian doughnuts are among the pastries available.
SerbFest also features a beer garden.
Tamburitza bands will play throughout the festival. Singer Milana Anicic will perform Saturday and Sunday night. There also will be kolo dancing Saturday night, Dejanovic said.
Admission and parking are free at both festivals.
