MERRILLVILLE | Fridays are usually reserved for wearing purple in the Merrillville Schools. The students at Fieler Elementary School love to show their Pirate Pride by wearing purple every Friday so when fourth grader Ayla Hood approached Principal Waugh about changing that tradition for a day, she was intrigued.
“Ayla politely asked if she could have a meeting with me to discuss an idea she had. She was talking with her mother about the importance of breast cancer awareness and wanted to do something at school.” Ayla’s idea was for Fieler Elementary School to wear pink one Friday to help raise awareness for the cause. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Ayla made an announcement explaining the cause every morning.
The hallways of Fieler Elementary School were adorned with pink shirts, socks, and hair bows all because one fourth grade student had the courage to share her idea. The picture shows Ayla wearing a homemade t-shirt in front of some of her classmates and her teacher, Mr. Bill Polites.
