MERRILLVILLE | A special Healing Service with a Eucharistic Celebration will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church, 8303 Taft St. All are welcome.

The Filipino community has arranged to have the Rev. Fernando Suarez, MMMP, from the Philippines, to lead this service. Some people believe the Rev. Suarez has special healing powers.

"Father Fernando will place his hands on each individual. . .healing them and then giving them a blessing. . .some may fall back or to the floor because of his healing touch through his hands," said Claudia Pienta, music directress at the church. "We have people calling for information from as far as Ohio, Michigan and Illinois."

Rev. Suarez visited the Carmelite Fathers Shrine in Munster "and performed a miracle with a girl who was confined to a wheelchair," Pienta added. "He asked the Holy Spirit to heal her. . .and then asked her to walk with him and her family said she couldn't, but when she stood up with him - she walked."

The Rev. Suarez spent his early adulthood utilizing his chemical engineering degree, but moved to Canada in 1995 and pursued his desire to follow the Lord as a Roman Catholic priest. In May, 2002, the Rev. Suarez was ordained to the priesthood in Ottawa, and is now a priest of the Missionaries of Mary Mother of the Poor in the Apostolic Vicariate of San Jose, Occidental Mindoro, Philippines.

According to his biography, the Rev. Suarez discovered that the Lord had given him a very special gift around the age of 16. As he felt God calling him to minister to and pray with people who were sick, he realized that these people were getting healed.

Since his ordination, the Rev. Suarez has found that the gift of healing has become more pronounced in him and God is using him in a mighty way. Since July, 2003, he regularly conducts healing Masses, retreats and missions, with large numbers of people in attendance.
