MERRILLVILLE | A fire damaged a house in the 1000 block of East 61st Place late Monday.
Merrillville Deputy Fire Chief Jim Lilley said the fire started just after 10 p.m. in the home's detached garage. The fire jumped to the house, causing damage to a portion of the structure.
The homeowners were at the residence when the fire started but were not injured, he said.
Firefighters put out the blaze within 40 minutes, Lilley said. It was unclear late Monday what started the fire.
By midnight, firefighters were carrying their equipment back to their trucks as snow started to blanket the neighborhood.
The Crown Point Fire Department assisted one of Merrilville's stations while firefighters worked to put out the fire.
