MERRILLVILLE | Firefighters had to force entry into a local restaurant after a motorist saw smoke pouring out of the business Wednesday night, officials said.

Lydia's Cafe, in the 6700 block of Broadway, was closed for the night when firefighters were called out to an active fire inside, Merrillville Fire Marshal Phil Topor said.

When fire officials arrived after 7 p.m., they had to break the windows to gain entry into the building, he said.

The fire was put out within 15 minutes and nobody was injured, Topor said.

Surrounding businesses were not damaged, he said.

Fire officials were investigating the cause of the fire late Wednesday.
