MERRILLVILLE | A proposed restaurant in Merrillville would be owned and operated by veterans.
Brian Cody, a former U.S. Marine, is pursuing the restaurant with the assistance of Veterans Life Changing Services, a Gary-based organization that assists veterans as they transition back to civilian life.
Cody said the Veterans Cafe and Grill would be at 7805 Taft St., and the business would employ veterans.
Cody, who has a culinary background, is seeking town approval to open the business. The Town Council on Tuesday decided to waive filing fees associated with his zoning requests.
Cody said memorabilia would be sold at the restaurant, and proceeds generated through those sales would benefit veterans.
He hopes the business will open in November.
Cody said he went to Veterans Life Changing Services about three years ago when he was suffering mobility issues.
"I didn't think I could walk again," he said.
The organization helped him recuperate and also provided Cody with skills to become an entrepreneur, he said.
Cody looks to provide training at Veterans Life Changing Services to help other veterans become successful business owners, he said.
