MERRILLVILLE | A 22-year-old Gary woman allegedly stole money from a Merrillville grocery store in which she worked.
Shannon Mathews was charged in Lake Criminal Court with felony theft.
Court documents state Mathews handled multiple transactions in which she manually entered coupons that didn't exist into her cash register until a refund was due.
Video surveillance shows Mathews taking that money and placing it into her pocket or under the cash register to take it later, the documents state.
Mathews allegedly took nearly $2,300 through the transactions.
Court documents state Mathews gave a letter to Merrillville police stating she took the money on multiple days in October, and she apologized for her actions.
