MERRILLVILLE | A high-speed pursuit on Interstate 65 late Tuesday was a gas guzzler, Merrillville police said.
The chase originated in Merrillville and ended when the suspect’s vehicle ran out of gas in Jasper County, Merrillville Police Chief Joseph Petruch said.
About 10:45 p.m., Merrillville police attempted to stop the vehicle near 63rd Avenue and Harrison Street for traffic violations, including an unreadable temporary plate and a broken taillight, Petruch said.
He said the Lake Station woman who was driving the vehicle refused to pull over and fled at excessive speeds through town.
The chase briefly slowed after the vehicle crossed Broadway, Petruch said. A passenger left the suspect’s vehicle and was apprehended, he said.
The suspect’s vehicle drove away and later entered I-65.
Petruch said the chase headed south on I-65, with the suspect’s vehicle reaching speeds of 110 mph.
The vehicle eventually ran out of gas near Ind. 14 in Jasper County, he said.
The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody and transported to Lake County Jail, Petruch said.
Police said Wednesday they were pursuing felony charges against her.
The chase caused no injuries or property damage, Petruch said.
