MERRILLVILLE | A 27-year-old Highland man is fighting for his life after a hit-and-run Sunday near 80th Place and Broadway, his sister said.
A vehicle struck Mitchell Heeringa as he was walking about 2 a.m., said Jim Lilley, Merrillville's chief of detectives.
Amanda Heeringa, Mitchell's sister, said her brother had emergency brain surgery after the crash.
"I just want to find out who did this," Amanda Heeringa said.
She said her brother remains in critical condition. He suffered three fractured vertebrae and his brain and lungs are bruised.
"It's day by day," she said.
A police report indicates a white four-door Nissan occupied by two males and a female was seen leaving the scene, but it is uncertain if the vehicle was involved in the crash.
Anyone with information about the hit-and-run can contact Lilley at (219) 769-3531, ext. 360.
