MERRILLVILLE | The 6th Grade Blue Team Math students were starting a chapter on decimals. Miss Hill explained that at the beginning of the week, each student was given their own check registry sheet that they were to carry from room to room each day. Based on behavior, coming to class prepared, following directions and procedures, the students were “given” money that was credited to their accounts by their teachers. The students could also be fined for misbehavior, not coming to class prepared, being tardy, etc. Throughout the week they practiced balancing their checkbooks to see how much money they had earned (adding and subtracting decimals).
On Thursday the students were given a wish list to decide on some of the items they would like to purchase the following day. They were to calculate how much money they wanted to spend and compare it to how much money they had earned (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and comparing decimals).
On Friday the students were allowed to purchase their items at our Blue Team Shopping Spree, held in one of the lecture halls. They could purchase items such as candy, pencils, markers, erasers, folders, lunch with the Miss Hill/Math Teacher, nail polish, body spray, free homework passes, first in lunch line passes, etc. Once they decided on their purchases, they added up their total and were given a blank check.
We discussed how to write a check and each student wrote one check to me for the items they were choosing to purchase (writing in standard form and word form). They then recorded their check in their check registry to see how much money was left over. Pirate bucks were handed out to each student who had any additional money in their check book.
