MERRILLVILLE | A Wednesday night fire at a Merrillville restaurant caused about $75,000 in damage to the business, according to the Merrillville Fire Department.
The cause of the blaze at Lydia's Cafe remained undetermined Thursday, but it continues to be investigated, Merrillville Fire Marshal Phil Topor said.
Topor said he could not comment on where the flames originated at the restaurant, which is in the 6700 block of Broadway, or if the fire is suspicious.
Topor said the restaurant closed for the night about 6 p.m. Wednesday.
The Merrillville Fire Department received its first report of the blaze about 7 p.m.
Topor said a motorist reported seeing smoke pouring out of the business.
Firefighters had to break the windows to gain entry into the building, Topor said.
The fire was put out within 15 minutes, he said.
Windows and doors at the facility were boarded up by Thursday morning.
Topor said the restaurant will be closed until repairs are completed.
There were no injuries during the blaze, and surrounding businesses were not damaged.
