MERRILLVILLE | Investigators continue to seek information about what transpired during a shooting Thursday.
About 3 p.m., police were sent to the 5700 block of Pennsylvania Street in response to a report of shots fired.
Merrillville police Detective Cmdr. Robert Wiley said 17 bullet casings and two bullet fragments were located there.
The Gary Police Department later located a white Buick near 15th Avenue and Taft Street. The vehicle had several bullet holes, Wiley said.
The owner of the Buick later arrived and told police he was the victim of a robbery. He didn't indicate what was taken from him, Wiley said.
The man indicated two men approached him in a parking lot at an apartment complex on Pennsylvania Street.
The man reported he fled the area. He told police the two men ran around his car and shot toward him in the 5700 block of Pennsylvania Street.
The man said he fired back at the two men, who reportedly fled in a silver vehicle, according to a police report.
Wiley said investigators haven't been able to verify the man's account of the situation.
Residents in the area have told police they heard the shots and two men were seen driving north on Pennsylvania Street in a silver or white Dodge Durango.
Wiley said Merrillville police recovered the white Buick and the department is seeking a search warrant to examine the vehicle.
No injuries have been reported in the shooting, Wiley said.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Merrillville police Detective Ray Smith at (219) 769-3531.
