CROWN POINT | A trial begins this week for a man accused of killing a Lucky Mart Foods clerk last year.
Jeremy Blue, 22, was charged in March 2012 with murder, murder in the perpetration of a robbery and robbery.
Blue is accused of killing store clerk Judi Simpson-Beaver, 48, during an armed robbery at the convenience store at 5695 Cleveland St in Merrillville.
A jury was seated Monday for the trial that is expected to last up to two weeks.
Blue is alleged to have entered the store wearing a hockey mask, pointing a gun at Simpson-Beaver and demanding money, according to court documents.
Police said Blue took two drawers containing cash.
Walking toward the exit, Blue is alleged to have stopped and fired a shot at Simpson-Beaver, of Merrillville. Police have said he then walked behind the store counter and fired another round at Simpson-Beaver's head.
Blue lifted his mask after leaving the store and a witness got a clear view of Blue's face, court records state.
At the time, police said Simpson-Beaver moved to Merrillville from Texas about a year before the shooting and worked at Lucky Mart Foods for about six months.
Police found a brown and maroon Oldsmobile at Blue's nearby home that matches the description of a vehicle seen fleeing the area after the robbery and shooting.
Video surveillance of the armed robbery and shooting shows the suspect is wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt with "Royal Estoc Empire" written on it.
Merrillville police received a tip from an anonymous caller who claims to know Blue, documents state. That person told police Blue has been seen wearing the same sweatshirt seen in the video.
The trial continues Tuesday with opening arguments before Lake Criminal Court Judge Clarence Murray.
