MERRILLVILLE | The weather was perfect on Saturday, September 28 for John Wood Elementary School’s 2nd annual Safety Fair.
It was a highly interactive day with representatives from many local agencies. The Merrillville Fire Department gave out fire hats and water bottles and allowed students to interact with the many different tools on their truck. Fireman were on hand from the Ainsworth station. We also had representatives from the Department of Natural Resources, the Hobart Police Department, Prompt ambulance, the Hobart YMCA, Trek Bicycle, Fleet Feet, and IUN Dental.
The SWAT team from Northwest Indiana had their mobile SWAT command center complete with many items utilized by the SWAT. The children tried on the vests and held the shields. They were really excited to talk with all of the volunteers who gave of their time to teach the children about a variety of safety issues from the importance of brushing and flossing, to how to report a fire, and bicycle safety. Concessions were available, and a coloring contest and a raffle completed the day’s activities.
We want to thank the participating organizations including Firehouse Subs, who contributed to this wonderful day. Safety is such an important aspect of education and this hands-on, fun-filled day was a perfect opportunity for families to continue learning about safety together.
