MERRILLVILLE | The Carpenters Local 1005 and 599 invited all Lake and Porter County public elementary schools to participate in their Kids Caring for the Community project. Schools could participate in a variety of community service projects that earn them an entrance into a drawing for $750.00 for their school. Fieler Elementary School definitely wanted to participate.
The third grade teachers at Fieler Elementary School initiated a school-wide service project collecting quarters and rolls of paper towels for the Humane Society of Hobart. All of the classes at Fieler participated in the project. Together they collect 136 rolls of paper towels and $225.36 to donate to the Humane Society of Hobart.
The Humane Society of Hobart was founded and received it’s charter in 1954. Before this time, people were struggling to find a solution to the ever increasing number of strays and running animals. The shelter was founded by a group of local citizens and the land for the shelter was donated by Bertha Jacoby. Through the help of many, the shelter became a reality. The Society has provided animal control for the City of Hobart since 1957. They take in an average of 5,700 animals per year.
