MERRILLVILLE | Lake County Public Library bid farewell to Director Larry Acheff, who retired at the end of 2011, and has welcomed Ana Grandfield as his successor.
Acheff joined the Lake County Public Library staff in 1985 as the assistant director and had served as director since 1999.
During his tenure, he was involved with the building of the new St. John Branch Library, the Cedar Lake Branch Library, and the Lake Station-New Chicago Branch Library, as well as the remodeling of the Hobart, Highland Branch, Munster and Dyer-Schererville branches.
He was also instrumental in creating and maintaining the library's cost containment plan in order to make sure the Lake County Public Library continued to thrive during difficult economic times.
In honor of his accomplishments and hard work, Acheff was awarded the Distinguished Hoosier Award by the Governor's Office on Dec. 29.
The Lake County Public Library Board of Trustees has appointed Ana Grandfield as director, effective Jan. 1. Grandfield has served as the assistant director since 2000.
She has worked closely with Acheff on several major projects, such as the construction of three new library branch buildings and four library building renovations. She is currently overseeing the major remodeling project of the Central Library in Merrillville.
Grandfield received her master's degree from the University of Illinois' Graduate School of Library Science and Information Science and in her 25-year library career she has served in the Periodicals, Reference, Genealogy, and Local History departments.
