Lt. Edward M. Davies, 59, was presented with the Addie Maddox Award in June for his outstanding devotion and fraternalism to his law enforcement career.
Davies was recognized by Indiana State Fraternal Order of Police President Tim Downs at the Hilton Hotel in Indianapolis. The award is the highest recognition presented by the state FOP to any officer.
“It was extremely humbling,” Davies said of the award. “You are stunned when your name is called, you rise and walk to the podium to accept the award and to say thank you, and due to being overwhelmed, nothing comes out.
“It is an award that I have never given any thought to being the recipient. As my pastor, DeWan Bynum, says every Sunday, ‘We give, because it’s the right thing to do’.”
Davies has served in law enforcement for 33 years, starting in 1979 as a patrolman. As part of the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, he worked as a criminal investigator, hostage crisis negotiator, radio communications supervisor, and work release warden.
After attaining the rank of sergeant, he was appointed to the sheriff’s command staff in 1997.
Davies currently serves as lieutenant and senior supervisor for the Indiana University Northwest Police Department.
“I like being of service to people and assisting them during their time of need. You have the opportunity to assist someone different every day. I like the fact that each day presents a new challenge,” he said of his position at IUN.
Davies received his law enforcement management degree from Calumet College of St. Joseph, and was a graduate of the 180th session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va.
He has served as the Indiana State FOP diversity chairman since 2005 and has been the sheriff’s pension chairman in 2003.
Davies is a member of Lake County Police Chris Anton FOP Lodge 125 in Merrillville and attends Christian Valley Baptist Church in Gary.
He resides in Merrillville with wife Johnnie Davies, and enjoys rose gardening and spending time with his three grandchildren.
