MERRILLVILLE | The town could receive improvements to multiple Canadian National Railway crossings.
Public Works Director Bruce Spires said he recently was contacted by CN regarding railroad crossings on Taft Street, Madison Street and Hendricks Street.
CN told him the railway plans to repair the three crossings with new asphalt after the weather gets warmer.
Plans for the improvements come after the town complained about the condition of some crossings.
Town Council President Carol Miano said driving over the crossings on Taft Street south of 61st Avenue and on Madison Street north of 65th Lane can be jarring for motorists.
In addition to contacting the railway about the matter, Miano sought assistance from U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky, D-Merrillville.
Councilman Shawn Pettit said he would like the railway to improve the crossings with rubberized material instead of asphalt because the rubberized material can last longer.
Spires said CN has plans to address a separate issue at the Hendricks Street crossing.
He said an electrical issue has caused gates there to activate when trains aren't passing.
