MERRILLVILLE | The Plan Commission has changed the zoning of more than 62 acres of undeveloped land near 101st Avenue and Colorado Street.

The property, once intended for a large residential development, had zoning for mixed residential use.

The commission on Tuesday unanimously decided to revert the zoning of the land to agricultural because the development didn't advance, town officials said.

The property had an agricultural zoning before it was slated for residential use.

Deep River Development previously owned the property before the land went into foreclosure, town leaders said.

The property currently is owned by BMO Harris Bank.

Plan Commission attorney Bill Touchette said there is a potential buyer for the property, but he didn't name the buyer.

Touchette said the buyer and BMO Harris Bank have indicated they aren't interested in keeping the mixed residential zoning.

He didn't say how the property would be used if it is sold to the potential buyer. Touchette said the buyer could "hold on to it for a while" before making a decision about how to use the land.

In other business, the commission also unanimously approved a revision to plans for another phase at the Prairie Point apartment complex on 93rd Avenue east of Taft Street.

Attorney Richard Anderson, who represents the complex, said the new plans eliminated one lot in the next phase.

The number of units that would be constructed would be reduced from 126 to 112 because of the removal of the lot, Anderson said.

The lot had to be eliminated from the plans because a portion of it is considered a wetland, he said.

No determinations have been made regarding how that lot would be used.

Anderson said construction of the new units could begin "in the next few months."
