MERRILLVILLE | Town officials haven't provided much information about an international company that is considering locating in Merrillville, but efforts to bring the business to the area has it's own code name.
Town Councilman Shawn Pettit referred to the efforts as "Project Eagles" during Tuesday's Redevelopment Commission meeting.
Pettit said the company has been looking for a location in Indiana for three to four years, and the AmeriPlex at the Crossroads development in Merrillville could be a landing spot.
"It's a big deal in my eyes," Pettit said.
Pettit wouldn't name the company or the type of business it conducts because of confidentiality.
"We have to step lightly," Pettit said of providing information about the company.
He recalled a previous situation in which a business interested in locating in Merrillville backed out because too much information was revealed before any official action was taken.
A Redevelopment Commission workshop is scheduled for May 27, and more information about Project Eagles could be made public at that session, said Pettit, the commission's president.
He said representatives from the Indiana Economic Development Corp. will be at that meeting.
It appears attracting the company to Merrillville would involve financial incentives from the town.
Pettit said tax abatement could be offered, but he didn't comment on other incentives Merrillville is being asked to provide.
"There's some significant risks for the town," Pettit said.
Before Merrillville pledges financial support, Pettit wants a solid commitment from the international company regarding locating in town, he said.
