MERRILLVILLE | The town's Stormwater Management Board continues to attract the Town Council's attention.
Councilman Shawn Pettit on Tuesday said the council needs to set a meeting to discuss the board and recent action it has taken.
"Things have to be looked at," Pettit said.
Those issues include new committees the board formed, a sign-in sheet at the stormwater resource center and one board member's request for compensation of wages he would lose by attending a meeting associated with stormwater matters.
Councilman Richard Hardaway said a sign-in sheet the board instituted at Merrillville's stormwater resource center is discriminatory.
The stormwater board decided last week to exempt the council and Merrillville's town manager from signing in there.
Hardaway said it's unfair for residents to have to sign in because they elected the council.
"They're the bosses," Pettit said of Merrillville residents.
No other town departments have sign-in sheets.
The council also briefly discussed a letter issued by stormwater board member Curt Luna.
Hardaway said Luna has requested compensation for wages he would lose if he were to take time off from work to attend the municipal separate storm sewer systems annual meeting in May in Indianapolis.
The council didn't take action on the request Tuesday. Hardaway said the council hasn't received such a request before.
Councilmen also remain uncertain about the need for personnel, finance and by-laws committees the stormwater board recently formed.
Several councilmen said they believe the committees duplicate efforts already in place.
Leonard White, president of the stormwater board, said the committees are needed to give the panel a better understanding of the structure of stormwater operations and to improve the utility.
White on Tuesday told the council he feels stormwater board members are being hindered from doing what they think is right for residents.
He said he would like a meeting with the council to explain what the board is trying to accomplish.
