MERRILLVILLE | A decision to adjust a position in the town administration office could produce "substantial" savings, Clerk-Treasurer Eugene Guernsey said.
Town Council President Carol Miano said the position will be reduced to part time after the current assistant retires effective Friday.
Guernsey said the main reason behind the change is cost savings.
He said figures haven't been established regarding the total savings, but he thinks it could be thousands of dollars.
Miano said the town has started the process to fill the position, but the town won't have a person hired before the current employee retires Friday.
Merrillville will have employees from other departments assist in the town administration office while the spot is vacant.
Miano said she thinks the office will continue to run smoothly when the position becomes part time.
She said the position could be changed back to full time in the future if it's necessary.
Miano said this isn't the first time the town has adjusted a position to save money.
The clerk-treasurer's office changed one if its positions to part time after a person there retired, Miano said.
Guernsey said the office remained productive after the change.
