MERRILLVILLE | Accompanied by a Merrillville fire engine blaring its siren, Hailey Perryman pulled her wagon through her neighborhood Monday morning seeking donations for the Riley Hospital for Children.
It's an annual tradition for Perryman, 12, and even the pouring rain wouldn't stop her from collecting money for the Indianapolis hospital.
She waved to those watching from their windows and doorsteps.
Perryman's family and friends who walked behind her didn't seem to be daunted by the weather as they handed fliers to residents.
Perryman received a few donations before heading home to dry off and then head out to Merrillville Fire Station No. 2 to open her annual Kool-Aid stand.
The stand will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday at the station, 7905 Taft St.
Perryman has operated the fundraiser since 2008. She has collected nearly $22,000 for Riley Hospital for Children since then, according to her family.
Perryman decided to raise money for the pediatric facility after reading about it.
People unable to attend the fundraiser can send donations until July 31 to 7914 Wilson St., Merrillville, IN 46410. Checks should be made out to Riley Children's Foundation.
