MERRILLVILLE | The town will demolish dilapidated structures at the site of a proposed park to honor area unions, Merrillville officials said.
Bruce Spires, Merrillville's town manager/director of municipal operations, said a large shed and an abandoned house on the property in the 7200 block of Broadway are scheduled for demolition. Merrillville acquired the land to create Union Park.
Town Council President Carol Miano said "everything is in total disarray" in the shed. Spires said the only portions left of the house are the frame and roof.
Miano said the property also has been used as a dumping site.
After the structures are torn down, the Lake County Sheriff's Work Release program will clean up the land, Spires said.
Miano plans to have a groundbreaking ceremony for Union Park, but it hasn't yet been scheduled. She said Union Park won't include playground equipment but rather would be a place for reflection.
