MERRILLVILLE | A person is being held in connection with the death of a 28-year-old Lake Village man, Merrillville police said.
The Lake County coroner's office notified Merrillville police Friday regarding the death of Jacob Oxley, police said.
The coroner's office determined Oxley was involved in an altercation with a male subject about 10:30 p.m. Thursday at the International Union of Operating Engineers hall near Taft Street and 84th Place, police said.
The male subject was located and questioned by police. He is being held at Lake County Jail pending charges, police said.
Merrillville police also obtained video footage of the altercation and interviewed witnesses.
Staff at the coroner's office said Monday that Oxley's case is pending and refused to release information about the time, location and cause of his death.
Oxley was a member of International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150.
"We are devastated by the loss of a brother, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this very difficult time," the union said in a statement. "It is our understanding that an autopsy has been performed to determine the cause of death, and we will work in total cooperation with law enforcement in any investigation of the details surrounding this tragedy."
Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Robert Wiley, Merrillville's chief of detectives, at (219) 769-3722, ext. 360.
