MERRILLVILLE | A Merrillville police officer was injured in a car wreck late Saturday as he was heading to a domestic disturbance call, the Lake County Sheriff's Department said.
The crash happened at 10:50 p.m. as the officer was traveling south on Taft Street with his emergency lights activated, said Patti Van Til, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's department. The officer swerved to the right of the road to avoid hitting a vehicle that pulled onto Taft Street from 65th Avenue.
The officer's vehicle jumped the curb and hit a tree, which caused the car to flip, Van Til said.
The officer was treated and released at St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart, Van Til said.
He was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, Van Til said.
No one was cited for the crash, but it remains under investigation.
