MERRILLVILLE | Two Merrillville officers have received level 1 commendations for efforts that led to the arrest of a burglary suspect.

Merrillville officers Allison Ellis and Lance Schmidt were instrumental in locating and apprehending Claude Winford, 58, of Battle Creek, Mich., after a burglary was reported June 4 at a Speedway gas station at 98 W. 73rd Ave.

After police were advised of the situation, Ellis spotted a 2011 Lincoln MKZ Winford was driving, police said. Winford allegedly fled the area after Ellis stopped the car.

Following a pursuit, Schmidt was involved in arresting Winford.

Cash register drawers from the gas station were found in the Lincoln MKZ, which was reported stolen in Jackson, Mich.

Winford was charged in Lake Criminal Court with burglary, theft and two counts of resisting law enforcement.
