MERRILLVILLE | For the second time this month, Bruce Spires' title in Merrillville has changed.
The Town Council unanimously decided Spires will serve as Merrillville's town manager/director of municipal operations.
On April 9, Spires was named the interim town administrator after former Town Administrator Howard Fink resigned from the position.
Spires had been the town's public works director before taking on the new responsibility. He will continue to oversee operation of the Public Works Department in his current position, Town Councilman Tom Goralczyk said.
Goralczyk said Spires will receive a raise, but his new salary hadn't been determined as of Tuesday.
Even with the salary increase, Merrillville will save funds because the council decided to combine the public works director and town manager roles into one position, Goralczyk said.
He said Spires has "done an exceptional job" while serving as the public works director, and he thinks Spires will perform well in his new position.
Spires wasn't at Tuesday's council meeting because he was attending a conference in Columbus, Ind., Goralczyk said. Spires couldn't be immediately reached following the meeting.
Spires has more than 25 years of experience with Merrillville. He was the public works director for 12 years. His first position with the town was working as summer help with the Public Works Department.
