MERRILLVILLE | New playground equipment is slated to be installed soon at one of Merrillville's existing parks and later at a new park south of U.S. 30.
Merrillville Parks Superintendent Caryn Wilson said playground equipment from Stefek Park was removed in May.
A 2012 inspection of town parks found safety concerns with the previous equipment at Stefek.
The park, at the intersection of 70th Place and Harrison Street, has been prepped to receive new equipment, Wilson said.
Recent inclement weather has prevented the town from completing the installation.
"Hopefully next week we'll have more progress," Wilson said.
After the upgrades are finished at Stefek, new equipment will be installed at a new park in the Preserve subdivision, Wilson said.
Town Councilman Shawn Pettit has pushed for a park in the subdivision off Mississippi Street south of U.S. 30.
The town bought a parcel in the 2100 block of 87th Avenue in October for the park. The parcel cost $23,000.
