MERRILLVILLE | A proposed project could improve drainage in Merrillville's Meadowdale community and prevent deterioration to roads.
Matt Lake, executive director of Merrillville's Stormwater Utility, said some storm sewers in the neighborhood are "rotting away," which has caused drainage issues.
The poor drainage also is tearing up roads in the north Merrillville community, Lake said during a Stormwater Management Board meeting Tuesday.
The Stormwater Utility collaborated with the town's Public Works Department to examine the issue, Lake said.
He said stormwater infrastructure will be replaced during the project.
"It's long overdue," he said.
After the project is finished, it should result in "better roads" in the community, Lake said.
Merrillville will begin to seek bids for the project. In mid-March, the Stormwater Management Board could open bids it receives for the work, Lake said.
In other business, the Stormwater Utility plans to install signs advising people to stay away from two new retention ponds created along Taft Street.
Lake said the ponds could be enticing for recreational activities, but they shouldn't be used for that purpose.
Board member Leonard White said recent snow has covered ice that has formed in the ponds. Town officials are concerned people could get hurt if they attempt to walk in those areas.
