CROWN POINT | Lake County police arrested a 22-year-old Chicago man over allegations he fondled two adolescent girls Wednesday at Merrillville's Deep River Waterpark.
Patti Van Til, a spokeswoman for county police, said Friday her department is asking the Lake County prosecutor's office to charge Diego E. Lamas with sexual misconduct and assaulting the alleged victims' father and two police officers during a scuffle.
Lake County First Assistant Prosecutor Peter Villareal said Friday he cannot confirm whether his office has filed charges until the county clerk's staff completes its work on the case.
The clerk's office said Friday the charges may not become public until next week.
Van Til said the victims' family claims Lamas fondled the girls in the park's wave pool during the Fourth of July afternoon.
The family confronted Lamas, and park management alerted police, who arrived to stop Lamas as he was walking toward a park exit.
Van Til said Lamas struck one of the girls' father as he pointed out Lamas to police. Van Til said Lamas struck county officers during the arrest.
