MERRILLVILLE | A man believed to be involved in two robberies of Fifth Third Bank branches was arrested Thursday, police said.
The arrest happened Thursday afternoon after the bank's branch at 8477 Broadway was robbed, said Joseph Petruch, the Merrillville police chief. The man did not show a weapon but suggested he had one with him. No one was injured.
The man left with an undisclosed amount of money, Petruch said. Another man was waiting for him in a car outside the bank. Merrillville officers stopped the men on Interstate 65 near the Ridge Road exit.
Officials did not identify the man Thursday. Police did not say if the driver of the vehicle faces any charges.
Petruch said the money stolen from the bank Thursday was recovered.
Detectives think the man also was involved in last week's robbery of another Fifth Third Bank branch, Petruch said. The branches are less than 3 miles apart.
In that robbery, a man at 1:45 p.m. March 13 walked into the bank's branch at 6760 Broadway and asked a teller about opening a bank account, police said. He then announced he was robbing the bank and left on foot with an undisclosed amount of money.
He also hinted in that robbery that he had a weapon with him, police said.
FBI Supervisory Special Agent Bob Ramsey said an agent from Merrillville is assisting the Police Department and questioning the suspect.
It was unclear if the man will face state or federal charges.
