MERRILLVILLE | Interested and prospective volunteers are invited to attend a one-hour Volunteer Orientation and Training Session at 1:30 p.m. today the Meals on Wheels Community Room, 8446 Virginia St.
Applicants will have an opportunity to tour the facility and ask questions about Meals on Wheels and the services the agency provides.
Each day, volunteers assist in the delivery of more than 1,200 meals throughout Lake County.
“It just makes me feel really good, knowing I am helping the home bound and elderly receive proper nutrition,” said Pat Mistak, a volunteer on the Hobart route.
The duties of a meal delivery volunteer include driving your own vehicle and delivering meals on a route within your own community during the lunch hour; each route takes about 90 minutes to pick up and deliver.
Flexible monthly scheduling is available and volunteers can sign up for one day a month or several days a week.
Volunteer Manager Joan Vith noted that volunteers are needed for all routes throughout Lake County. “However, at the moment, we are particularly in need in the Merrillville and Whiting areas,” she said.
“In addition to individuals, many area organizations and businesses participate in our corporate volunteer program. We are confident businesses and organizations in Merrillville and Whiting will assist us as we reach out to the community for assistance,” Vith added.
