MERRILLVILLE | The Town Council has adopted an ordinance leveling fines for people caught possessing or using M-80s, M-100s, cherry bombs and other explosive devices banned by federal law.
The first offense would carry a $1,000 fine, town leaders said. A $2,000 fine would be charged for each subsequent offense.
The town began pursuing the ordinance after receiving complaints from residents regarding excessive fireworks use in Merrillville.
"Everybody is glad we're finally doing something about this," Councilman Tom Goralczyk said.
