MERRILLVILLE | A 54-year-old Merrillville man has been charged in connection with an attempted stabbing in the 7400 block of Jennings Place.
Brian Riebe was charged in Lake Criminal Court with battery with a deadly weapon, attempted battery with a deadly weapon, resisting law enforcement and two counts of criminal confinement, Merrillville police Detective Joe Cooper said.
A person related to Riebe told police she and Riebe began arguing after she returned home early Wednesday.
Cooper said Riebe grabbed a knife from the kitchen during the incident and attempted to stab the relative.
He said the relative suffered defensive wounds to her hands.
The woman allegedly was held against her will in the house, but she eventually escaped and fled to a neighbor's home about 3:20 a.m. to call police, Cooper said.
Riebe is accused of fighting with police after they made contact with him.
Cooper said a Taser device was used to take Riebe into custody.
Riebe is being held at Lake County Jail, Cooper said.
