MERRILLVILLE | More parks improvements are scheduled in Merrillville, including new play equipment, town officials said.

Town Councilman Tom Goralczyk said workers are expected to install new playground equipment early this week at Rosenbalm Park near the intersection of 73rd Place and Chase Street.

The park also will receive a new rubberized surface and landscaping changes, he said.

"Everything should be done and in place and ready to be used by Oct. 1," Goralczyk said.

He anticipates Merrillville would have a re-dedication ceremony for Rosenbalm after the work is complete.

Parks officials have received multiple inquiries about the status of the project after the previous equipment was removed months ago, Parks Superintendent Caryn Wilson said.

She said the park could receive more use with the new equipment than it did with the prior apparatus. Rosenbalm was among several parks the town identified as needing upgrades following a review of its facilities earlier this year.

After the review, the Town Council decided to designate $75,000 from the cumulative capital development fund for new parks equipment.

Merrillville's Pruzin Park was the first to receive new equipment this year.

Merrillville removed the previous equipment at Pruzin, 5750 Tyler St., shortly before the town's summer day camp started there.

Stefek Park, near the intersection of 70th Place and Harrison Street, is next in line for improvements, but it appears work on that project won't begin until next spring, Wilson said.

After ordering new park equipment, it takes about four to six weeks for it to be delivered, she said, so it would be too late in the year to install equipment at Stefek.
