MERRILLVILLE | Juveniles were targeted in two armed robberies that occurred within minutes of each other Monday night in Merrillville.
About 10:30 p.m., a male juvenile was walking in the 400 block of West 55th Avenue when two people addressed him by a name he didn't recognize, Merrillville police Detective Cmdr. Robert Wiley said.
After telling the people he didn't know anyone by that name, one of the people pulled out a gun, Wiley said. That person went through the victim's pockets and took the boy's cellphone.
One suspect is a black male who is about 5 feet 6 inches tall and skinny. The person was wearing a black shirt and carrying a revolver in his right hand.
The other suspect is a black male who is about 6 feet tall. He was wearing a gray shirt, and his hair was styled in short braids.
About 10:45 p.m., two males with pistols approached a large group of juveniles near 60th Drive and Delaware Drive and asked "what all you got?" according to a police report.
Cellphones were stolen during the robbery in the Regency Park subdivision. Wiley said shoes were taken from one of the victims.
One of the suspects was described as a male with dreadlocks. He was wearing a hat, Wiley said. The other male suspect has short hair and was wearing an Orlando Magic hat.
Wiley said the two cases have similarities, but police are uncertain if the robberies are connected.
Anyone with information about the robberies is asked to call Merrillville police at (219) 769-3531.
