MERRILLVILLE | The investigation of a Saturday night shooting remains active while a victim continues her recovery, police said.
A 15-year-old girl who was shot in the leg during the incident underwent surgery for her injury, Merrillville police Detective George Fields said.
The girl appears to be "doing well" following the injury, Fields said.
She was among a group of people walking east on 78th Avenue near Hendricks Street about 9 p.m. Saturday.
The girl was shot after a person in a dark-colored sedan fired three to four rounds at the group, Fields said.
Police have recovered the bullet that struck the girl, Fields said.
A passenger in the car yelled something at the group before the shots were fired. The sedan fled the scene after the shooting.
Fields said it's unknown what prompted the incident.
There have been no arrests in connection to the case, but Fields continues following leads, he said.
Fields also is investigating an unrelated shooting that occurred about 8:30 p.m. Sunday in the 5900 block of Grant Place.
A person involved in a disturbance at a home there reportedly left the residence after the situation. The person later returned and fired into the house, Fields said.
There were no injuries reported during the Grant Place shooting, Fields said.
There also have been no arrests in that case, he said.
Anyone with information about either of the shootings is asked to call Fields at (219) 769-3531.
