MERRILLVILLE | A local man's search for arrowheads turned up something much different.
The man discovered "a large sum of money" and immediately turned it into police in mid-July, Merrillville police Sgt. Bob Morgan said Monday.
Police continue to search for the owner of the funds.
Morgan said the man was walking on a frontage road near Art Hill Ford, which is on U.S. 30 west of Merrillville Road, when he located a cooler that had currency in and around it.
Morgan said police received no reports of the money being stolen.
He said he hopes announcing the funds were turned in to the Police Department will lead to police finding the owner of the currency.
He said he's sure there's someone "sick over losing" the money.
The person who owns the currency can call Morgan at (219) 769-3531.
If the money isn't claimed within six months, it will be given to the person who found it, Morgan said.
