MERRILLVILLE | Five Merrillville Pop Warner youth, Joshua Benton, Razariah Combs, Brandon Dawning, Jevon Lindsey and Aubin Robinson, were recently named All-American Scholars at the national Pop Warner level.
These quintet maintained a 96 percent grade point average and competed nationally with more than 8,800 applicants. They were invited to the 53rd Annual National Pop Warner Little Scholars Banquet held in Boston, Mass.
Pop Warner is known for its work with youth development in football, cheer leading and dance. Not as well known is the emphasis on academic dedication. Students involved in Pop Warner must perform academically within standards set forth by the national association, and those who excel beyond the minimum are recognized.
“We want athletes to excel academically as well as athletically,” said Edmond Griffin, Merrillville Pop Warner Board president. “You cannot succeed as an athlete without succeeding in the classroom; they go hand in hand.”
Final/late registration for 2013 Merrillville Pop Warner will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the purple hut at Merrillville Intermediate School, 1400 W. 61st Ave. Online registration is also available. For more information or to register online, visit www.mpwfootball.com.
