MERRILLVILLE | Town Council President Carol Miano wants drivers to have smoother rides when traveling over two Canadian National Railway crossings.
Miano said the town has received complaints about the crossings on Taft Street south of 61st Avenue and on Madison Street north of 65th Lane.
She said driving over the crossings can be jarring on vehicles and the people inside.
Miano described the crossings as a "hazard to the community," and she believes they are deteriorating.
CN spokesman Patrick Waldron said the railway has been in contact with the town about the matter.
Waldron said CN regularly inspects crossings for those types of issues, and some work was completed to one of the crossings last year.
He said no work specific to the town's complaints has been scheduled at the crossings, but he has notified a supervisor to examine those areas and take appropriate action following the inspection.
In addition to contacting the railway, Miano said she is seeking assistance from U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky, D-Merrillville.
When Visclosky recently visited Town Hall, Miano gave him a letter explaining the situation, she said.
"We're gonna see if we can get this corrected," Miano said.
