MERRILLVILLE | A man suffered life-threatening injuries after he was stabbed multiple times Sunday in the 6600 block of Fillmore Street.
The man was arguing about money with Shantelai Gilliam, 20, of Merrillville, while in a kitchen inside a residence, according to court documents. The man had a prior relationship with Gilliam, court records state.
A witness told police Gilliam became angry, grabbed a knife and stabbed the man several times, documents state.
When officers arrived about 7:10 p.m., the man was covered in blood and on the floor, court documents state. Gilliam was kneeling over him and holding a rag on his chest, according to the documents.
The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment for severe stab wounds to his chest.
Gilliam told police she argued with the man about money he allegedly owed her to support their child, documents state.
She said she grabbed the knife after the man bumped her and grabbed her arm, court documents state.
Gilliam also told police she didn't know how many times she stabbed the man or why she stabbed him, records state.
Gilliam was charged Tuesday in Lake Criminal Court with aggravated battery and battery by means of a deadly weapon.
