MERRILLVILLE | The students and staff of Merrillville Intermediate School came in green Friday to celebrate Morgan Nichols’ life. Green was her favorite color.
Morgan was a student on the sixth grade Green Team, with Mr. Wood as her homeroom teacher. She loved to read books and had many friends. Friday was a day of happy thoughts and good memories of Morgan. MIS was a sea of green, a different atmosphere than yesterday.
Yesterday, the MCSC Crisis Intervention Team was split between MIS and Pierce buildings to help the students and staff cope with the news of the Nichols’ family deaths by carbon monoxide.
Morgan was a sixth grade student at MIS. Her brother Matthew was an eighth grade student at Pierce.
There were group and individual sessions facilitated by the Guidance and Social Workers of the corporation. Many crafts, letters, and lots of tissue were handed out.
A memorial wall was created in the MIS cafeteria for all to see. Letters from MIS and Pierce Principals were sent home with Facts for Families on dealing with Children and Grief.
It was amazing to see the entire corporation bond together to deal with such a tragedy. Students showed that life does go on. Morgan will be truly missed, but always in our hearts. The wall items will be given to Morgan’s living relatives for a keepsake.
