MERRILLVILLE | Merrillville Intermediate School students collected $1,160 for Toys for Tots. The homeroom that collected the most money will receive a pizza party. Lola Caldwell’s sixth grade yellow team homeroom won, with a total of $158 collected.
The Student Council Members along with Victoria Baldwin/MIS Student Council Sponsor headed to Wal-Mart in Merrillville/Hobart to pick out some toys. Each Student Council member was given a $25 limit. The many Student Council members were grouped with a parent chaperone. Calculators and price checks were used to make sure no one went over. There were lots of toys chosen; from balls to trucks and girl’s dolls to Legos. When the shopping spree was done, 353 toys of all ages were bought! Students headed over to the Golden Corral for lunch before heading back to class.
Pastor Edward Sims Jr. of Victory Life Christian Center came to MIS to pick-up the toys. The toys will go to children of needy families who receive Government assistance from the East Chicago, Gary, Griffith, Hammond, Munster, Whiting, and parts of Merrillville. Families who signed up will be able to pick up toys on Wednesday/18 December 2013 from the Gary Genesis Convention Center starting at 9 a.m.
Pastor Sims gave Baldwin a crisp $100 for the Student Council’s efforts towards this community project. All 1,000-plus MIS students should be proud of themselves for helping this worthy cause during this season of giving.
