LANSING | A total of 2,083 canned good items were collected by Merrillville Intermediate School.
Mrs. Baldwin and the Student Council set the bar at 1,000 can goods. The MIS student body and staff surpassed that goal. The can goods were collected from Feb. 11 through March 27.
Mrs. Baldwin, who is also the Student Council Advisor, announced over the PA, “If everyone would just bring in one can, we could reach our goal."
“Have a Heart-Do Your Part” was the theme of the collection.
Each Student Council Representative had a box in their homeroom to collect food items. Out of the 41 homerooms at MIS, with 32 or fewer students in each homeroom, four homeroom classes collected more than 100 items with two homerooms collected more than 200 items.
All the cans were sorted by the Student Council representatives before the pick-up. The can goods collected will be picked up by the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana. Everyone came out a winner.
